Abstract
This presentation introduces the environmental control systems (ECS) of one unique indoor environment: the passenger cabin of large commercial airplanes. To sustain life and provide thermal comfort are the prime functions of aircraft environmental control systems. This presentation covers, firstly, the operating environment under which the aircraft ECS should function continuously. Secondly, the engineering fundamentals (such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer) of the ECS will be delineated along with the current as well as the latest development of the key sub-systems. Finally, there are several emerging challenges of the aircraft ECS will also be mentioned and discussed.
Dr. Chao-Hsin Lin简介:
Dr. Chao-Hsin Lin is a Technical Fellow of the Boeing Company based in Seattle, Washington, USA. Concurrently, he is an adjunct professor of Kansas State University, a graduate faculty of Purdue University, an advisory council member of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Minnesota–Twin Cities and a visiting professor of Tianjin University and Dalian University of Technology. He is also a member of the editorial board of Building and Environment.
Dr. Lin earned his B.S. in Environmental Engineering 1980 from National Cheng-Kung University and M.S. in Environmental Engineering 1982 from Nation Taiwan University and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering 1989 from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the U.S. His engineering career with General Motors spanned from 1989 to 1997. After joining the Boeing Company as a Principal Engineer (1997-2003), he was selected as an Associate Technical Fellow in 2003 and a Technical Fellow since 2006.
Dr. Lin’s current research areas include computational fluid dynamics, aircraft cabin environment, multiphase flows and fire/smoke characterization and suppression. He has published two book chapters and more than 60 journal and conference papers. He is also a holder of three U.S. patents.
Dr. Lin has received many distinctions and awards for his work from General Motors and Boeing. He is a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He is a licensed professional environmental engineer in Taiwan since 1980 and a licensed professional mechanical engineer in the State of Michigan, USA since 1996.
